JUSTICE Minister Bryan Kramer wants to know what the 2011 report on the Special Agricultural Business Lease (SABL) inquiry revealed.
He has directed Attorney-General Dr Eric Kwa and senior department officers to brief to him on the report.
“Since the inquiry (in 2011), nothing has been made clear on what was uncovered,” he said.
“We will take into account what the inquiry uncovered, and I will make submissions to the National Executive Council (NEC), with amendments and the law to be addressed as well.”
Northern Governor Gary Juffa had raised his concern on why the 2011 inquiry report has never been looked at.
“The SABL inquiry showed that 55,000 square kilometres of land were illegally taken by (foreign) companies,” Juffa said.
He said the inquiry costing K13 million was initiated on June 29, 2011 by former acting prime minister Sam Abal.
It showed that 75 SABLs were to be reviewed, but only 42 were presented by the two commissioners.
The third commissioner did not present his report, Juffa said.
“Of those 42 reviewed, 38 were deemed illegal but those SABLs are still operating.”
He said that now they were operating under the Forest Clearance Authorities, and (with) the same companies still involved.
“While we are concerned about the environment, this companies responsible for destroying it are still out there destroying it at will and totally inconsiderate to our future. Please address this matter.”
