Kramer plans to use social media to monitor police

POLICE Minister Bryan Kramer says he will use social media to monitor the performance of members of the police force.
“I intend to run a social media programme where people can get in touch with me directly and raise any concern they have in relation to the force,” he said.
“I will take that complaint, consider it and if it is justified, I will bring it to the attention of the police commissioner that this complaint has come to my office and I’m now lodging the complaint to you for you to look into those issues.
“If they (police investigations) confirm that complaints are justified, then they will take appropriate action according to the law.”
Kramer said his immediate concern was the safety of ordinary Papua New Guineans.
“Mums and dads can go home, catch the bus to the store, send kids to school, send kids to the store and they come back safely to the house.
“That is my priority even before arresting any one for high-level corruption. If a little girl gets raped while in school, they can contact me straight on Facebook and they will know straight away that the commissioner will get a report. My priority is locking up people raping little girls and second priority is locking up corrupt politicians. These priorities will run parallel.”
Kramer said he would give special consideration to the general duty and public safety sections of the police force to ensure that women and young girls feel free to move around the public without harassment.
“My focus is to improve the force. If we fix the force, it will do its job. Laws are clear, we just need good people. The force has suffered to the degree of politics that it is unheard of. I have been observing from the outside.”
