KIMBE Rugby League president and Cutters chairman Freddie Kumai says he will continue his involvement in the sport while serving as the new Talasea MP.
Also a businessman, he was declared as the winner at the counting centre at Sasi Muthuvel Stadium in the West New Britain capital on Tuesday.
Kumai told The National yesterday that rugby league had played a crucial role in helping him connect with youths in Talasea.
“Big thanks to the Cutters and Kimbe Rugby League,” he said.
“It was through rugby league that I got to meet youths and socialise with communities in the district.
“I got to work with and understand them through the sport over the last 20 years.
“So I will not quit. I will continue to be involved in the game in our district and province while serving as the Talasea MP.
“For Kimbe Rugby League, I’ll let my vice-president take over, but will continue to provide support.
“I will do the same for the Cutters.
“Youths are important members of our society, so getting them involved in sports is a great platform to build good young people.”
Kumai said he would continue to be involved in other activities, including church programmes.
“In my capacity as a member of the Catholic Diocese of Kimbe, I have worked with a lot people in the district,” he said.
“I am happy to continue my involvement in sports and church activities.”
