SP Hunter Samuel Yegip has returned to Papua New Guinea on compassionate grounds after playing his last Hostplus Cup game in the 36-22 win over Wynnum Manly in round 14 in Queensland, Australia.
The prop came in off the bench for his old club, Hela Wigmen, in their round-12 Digicel Cup game against Goroka Lahanis at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Yegip scored a double and was named as the man of the match in the Wigmen’s 22-12 win.
“My mother is sick and I have to be with her,” he said.
“So I asked the Hunters for a release and they arranged for my travel back to Port Moresby.
“I won’t be part of the Hunters for the remainder of this season, but I am hoping to return for next season.”
SP Hunters coach Matthew Church confirmed Yegip’s release on compassionate grounds.
“Samuel asked for a release to return home to tend to a family health concern,” he said.
“The Hunters granted the release and wished Samuel well for the remainder of the season.”
Meanwhile, Yegip said he was excited about his Wigmen return after his arrival last week.
He said he wanted to share his experience with the Kroton-sponsored side leading up to the top-six finals.
“I am happy to be back with the team,” Yegip said.
“It feels good to wear the Wigmen jersey again. I think the team is going well in the competition, so I am happy to strengthen our pack for the remainder of the season.
“I believe we can reach the finals, but our bigger goal is to win another premiership.
“I want to do my best for the club.”
