PAPUA New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) technical director Paul Isorua visited Wewak, East Sepik, last weekend to scout players for the Oceania Football Confederation Under-19 Championship.
The championship will be held in Tahiti in September.
A trial match was held at the Pora Oval to showcase potential prospects for the national U19 squad.
Caltex’s William Saubo, Wirui Saints’ Benjamin Bee, and Mud Skippers pair Jezshril Warren and Raynon Toro were selected from the trial.
Secretary-general Mervyn Mandawa told The National on Sunday that Isorua’s visit was a positive sign that his Wewak Football Association was on the right path to producing the next crop of footballers in the province.
“This is the first of its kind for PNGFA to come and do national selections,” he said.
“We see this as a significant step for us to continue building the capacity of our association.
“Our association has been doing a lot of great things to ensure soccer keeps developing in the province.
“One of our achievements is getting the association registered under PNGFA.”
Mandawa thanked PNGFA for entrusting talents with a train-and-trial opportunity.
