Lack of housing affects teachers

Letters

I BELIEVE one of the fundamental causes of the poor academic performances in the National Capital District (NCD) secondary schools annually is due to lack of accommodation for teachers in school premises.
How could schools in remote districts in PNG, with limited teaching and learning materials perform very well compared to some secondary schools in NCD, who have access to the best teaching/learning materials and aids?
Only a few schools in NCD perform very well and I would believe that their teachers are properly housed in the school premises.
Discipline – as one of the many performance indicators – not only rests on the students but on teachers too. Most teachers who reside in settlements do not behave as teachers and good role models in the community they live in.
They do not manage their time well to prepare their lessons for the next day.
Others rent small affordable place to live right in the heart of a settlement.
They don’t have enough space in the room to prepare lessons.
Teachers’ pay packets cannot sustain the rent.
How can a school admin continue to push and pull a cart behind a sick horse’s back when the horse’s welfare is not a concern for the school authority?
This is one of the reasons why many schools in NDC are performing below standards.
