YOUTHS from Lae’s Miles area celebrated the Christmas through sports.
They were assisted by Mountain Transport of 10-Mile with K1,000 for prizes for the winners in the six-day rugby league tournament which began last Wednesday.
Other companies and organisations based in the area including NARI, Hornibrooks, HBS, IPI Mountain Transport and Niu Gini Wholesale Drugs also assisted
The six teams were: 11 Roots, IPI Highway Eagles, Thai Mates, NARI Beatles, 4-Mile Eagles and 9-Mile Kera’s.
Association president Ismael Mark said the Miles area was known for its excessive drug, homebrew, alcohol and fighting.
However, the youths had decided to stay away from the illegal activities and dug deep into their pockets for a K300 registration fee for their teams.
They have appointed Josie Kong and Ori Hangiri as treasurer and secretary while Morris Kate, Terry Peter, Isaac Joseph and Roddie Sonas had been named as officials.
They were allowed to use the field belonging to the owners of Mountain Transport, IPI group of companies, on condition that they build three pit toilets, Kong said.
She said if all requirements were met, they would organise games for women and children next year.
