LAE’s metropolitan command is doing random foot patrols at designated areas in the city in a bid to minimise crime and enforce effective policing, says commander Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban.
Kunyanban said the public was being cautioned not to roam the streets late at nights, as the police would not hesitate to arrest anyone spotted roaming the streets late at night or in the early hours of the morning.
“Many of these people going around the city at those times, do have in their possession offensive weapons,” he said.
“These people may be trying to commit crimes.”
Innocent people and business houses had been victims to these criminals and police is conducting this foot patrols to ensure that the lives and properties of the innocent people were protected.
Kunyanban said an example was when three men, in the early hours of last Wednesday, were stopped at East and West Taraka junction and were searched,
He said the search resulted in the police confiscating a factory-made pistol and live ammunitions.
He also said that prior to that, a murder suspect was also arrested while they were doing foot patrols at the Kamkumung area.
“Police foot patrols had just started and more of such exercises would be conducted randomly at selected areas within the city,” he said.
“The public should now be careful and work closely with police to ensure crime rate is low.”
Kunyanban said all units in the Lae metro command and reservists would take turns to stop and check suspicious people who were up and about during odd hours.
“If the police found an offensive weapons on you or if you were trying to commit an offence, the police will arrest you and charge you accordingly,” he said.
Kunyanban added that it was advisable that people should be at the right place and at the right time.
He said people should be at home and avoid roaming about aimlessly to avoid getting into problems which may lead to lives being lost or properties damaged.
