Lawyers to join police as reservists

THE Papua New Guinea Law Society is working with the constabulary to have lawyers join the police reserve force, according to society president Hubert Namani.
“This is a collaboration that promises to support police initiatives around the nation, from investigations to prosecutions,” he said.
Namani thanked Assistant Police Commissioner, Crimes Hodges Ette, a senior counsel tasked by Police Commissioner David Manning to develop the initiative.
“This initiative signifies the start of a promising partnership between our professional cohort and the law enforcement agency,” he said.
Namani said last Friday that the law society and the constabulary had agreed on the arrangement and make it work.
The final terms are to be worked out later.
He said the arrangement would also enable some police prosecutors to be attached with law offices and firms, offering them exposure to legal practice, ethics and culture.
He added that they hoped to enhance the relationship that lawyers and the police force currently have by sharing their expertise with one another.
