THE Lae Football Association is looking at assembling a competitive team, Lae Natives, for the upcoming National Soccer League season, says acting general secretary and fixtures chairman Alex Toki.
He told The National that association held selection trials last weekend following an invitation from league Northern Conference coordinator Tinge Emuka.
“We split 64 players into four teams for the trials last weekend, beginning on Friday,” Toki said.
“We’re looking at trimming the number of players to 30 men.
“The executives of the association have agreed for the team to be called ‘Lae Natives’.
“They will compete in the Northern Conference, joining Morobe Wawens as representatives of the association.
“We will name our 30-man squad in a few weeks’ time.
“The association will sponsor the team with vacancies for the team management to be advertised.
“This is to ensure that our executives concentrate on the association’s welfare while the team management concentrates on the players’ welfare.”
Toki said the vacancies would be advertised for the roles of team manager, treasurer and president.
He said the association would pay the necessary fees for Lae Natives’ participation in the country’s premier football competition.
Meanwhile, Toki offered the naming rights to potential sponsors, including business houses willing to assist.
