Liquor board urged to control beer sales

Highlands

THE Western Highlands government and the liquor licensing board have been urged to control the sale of alcohol in the province.
Hagen MP William Duma said alcohol-related problems were a big concern because there was lack of control over the sale of alcohol.
Duma said the provincial government and the provincial liquor licensing board were ignoring the alcohol-related problems and continued to issue licences.
“The peace and good order committees in the province have to start raising this concern and start talking to Governor Paias Wingti to look into this matter,” he said.
“We have clubs popping up like mushrooms here and there.
“Are the provincial government and the liquor board aware of it?
“There have to be a control mechanism in place to deal with the sale of liquor in the province.
“What benefit is alcohol giving to the people? I have been raising this concern and yet the provincial liquor licensing board is not taking action.”
Duma told the provincial peace and good order committees to count the number of alcohol-related fights and compensation they had attended and report it to the liquor licensing board and Wingti.
He said people when under the influence of alcohol did not have any control and respect for others.
