Staff of the Loloata Island Resort outside Port Moresby cleaned up the beach and collected 95kg of rubbish.
General manager Paul Scott said volunteers, staff members and their families all helped.
“We clean up on the island everyday where 60kg of rubbish is collected,” he said.
“But this was special because we cleaned up Lion Island.
“We got many bags of rubbish and the reason we chose this weekend too was it’s important for us to promote conservation in the local region.
“It’s also July which is ocean plastic month internationally where they give awareness on taking plastic out of the ocean and that’s why we support conservation group Sea Sheppard.
“If you look around the world, plastics are killing oceans so if we can do a very small bit and just help clean up the plastic, maybe that will help and if other people see us, maybe they will stop throwing rubbish in the ocean.”
Scott said most of the rubbish came from surrounding villages.
“Most of it is plastic and if you leave them, they will breakdown into the ocean so we try to clean that up as much as we can,” he said. Scott’s advice to the surrounding villages: “Love our ocean, the ocean is so important to life. The oceans are dying and we need to protect and conserve them for our kids and I believe it’s one of the most important asset in Papua New Guinea and in the world.”
