A MAN facing a cybercrime-related charge appeared for mention in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Alexis Tam, from Queensland, is charged with one count of defamatory publication under section 21 (2) of the PNG Cybercrime Code Act, 2016.
Magistrate Tracy Ganaii adjourned the case to Sept 14 for further mention as court files were yet to be completed.
“Prosecutor has informed the court that files to the matter are not ready yet, case is still within the three months so we will adjourn again for another month to hear from the prosecutor on the police file,” Ganaii told Tam.
Police alleged that Tam between Aug 15 and 19, last year, used an electronic device, an iPhone with a recording device, to make publicly a defamatory material with: “Stop having an affair with my daughter or I will deal with you” concerning Jeffery Kennedy.
According to police, Tam allegedly recorded voice conversations between Adam Chin Cheah and complainant Jeffery Kennedy in Port Moresby.
Tam had circulated the voice recordings to his friends after recording the conversations without the knowledge of the complainant.
The complainant found out and reported the matter to police and Tam was arrested and charged.
He was released on a K500 bail.
Cheah, 18, of Malaysia and Philippines parentage, is facing a sexual penetration charge before the Waigani Committal Court.
Cheah’s case had been adjourned to Sept 9.
