St John Ambulance has received K40,000 worth of donation from the Malaysia Association of PNG (MAP).
The money was given at the St John headquarters in Port Moresby and the event was attended by the
Malaysian High Commissioner, association members and St John officials.
The donation will go towards the purchase of new radios and the conversion of two 4WD vehicles into ambalances for use on difficult roads outside the city, said
St John Ambulance chief executive Commissioner Mathew Cannon.
Cannon thanked the Malaysian Association for its donation said the 4WD ambulances will operate mainly in the outskirts of Port Moresby and Central.
“St John Ambulance operates mainly in Port Moresby and Central Province and with the rough terrain, mostly on the outskirts of Port Moresby and in Central, we need off-road suitable to allow our emergency medical technicians and paramedics to reach patients quickly,” said Cannon.
St John Ambulances is only partly funded by the government and is a body operating in accordance with the St John Council Incorporation Act of 1976.
It raises its funds through fee-based services, corporate ambulance membership in NCD, high quality private aeromedical evacuation, first aid training for businesses and support from sponsors such as the Malaysian Association.
St John is also looking at modifying five ambulances donated for last year’s Apec Leaders’ Summit to suit the road conditrions in Port Moresby and Central.
