A MAN died when a bomb exploded in his face in Kavieng after he had lit a fire near where it was, police say.
Police commander Gideon Ikumu said the man did not know that the World War 2 bomb was near where he lit a fire.
He said many wartime bombs were still in the area.
Meanwhile, an unmarked vehicle travelling at high speed hit a police vehicle with five officers on board on New Year’s Day in Kavieng.
Ikumu told The National that the incident occurred at 7am.
He said the five officers were on patrol along Court House Road near the power station.
No one was hurt. Police questioned the three suspects.
Ikumu commended the Kavieng police station commander for maintaining peace during the festive period.
