Marum identifies flaws

PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League high performance manager Michael Marum says he has identified flaws in Digicel Cup clubs in his recent visits around the country.
The PNG Kumuls coach said last week that the clubs had varying issues which he would raise with the PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) and PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL).
“Some clubs have sponsorship issues,” Marum said.
“Although they have a quality side, they struggle because of a lack of sponsorship.
“Other clubs have issues with their selection process.
“Sometimes the coach picks a different team and the chairman picks a different team — that’s where they have a problem.
“We also looked at everything from training, player activities and recovery. Those are some of the things we’ve noticed and improvement in those areas is needed to help develop the game.
“We have a big checklist.
“As soon as we complete it, we will present it to the PNGRFL chairman (Sandis Tsaka) or PNGNRLC manager Stanley Hondina for review in a bid to improve the Digicel Cup.”
Meanwhile, the former SP Hunters coach said he would look outside the Digicel Cup to identify talents for the Kumuls and SP Hunters.
“There are more talents out there, some in rural parts of the country who are lacking exposure,” Marum said.
“Through the high performance programme, we want to identify unknown talents and develop them for possible representative duties.”

  • Way to go chief Marum!
To many bribery for the selection into digicel cup.
Most plays with talent are still out there, it does not means they can not make it thru the PNGNRL, but its because they don’t have money to go in there.

    I SALUTE YOU!

  • There’s a need for a national policy to address the loopholes identified. These issues will impede the growth of rugby in the country. There’s need also exists to develop rugby in provinces that do not have rugby well established. We have yet to see this expansion plan. For example MOMASE, NGI and SOUTHERN regions have huge potential. Currently rugby in view is well established in the HIGHLANDS region
