TOWNSVILLE Blackhawks forward Moses Meninga is taking nothing for granted as he looks to maintain his spot in the national squad heading into next year’s Rugby League World Cup.
The 26-year-old told The National yesterday from Townsville that with rugby league coming to a halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was a challenge for him to maintain his fitness and avoid injury in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup next season.
“I’m looking forward to the World Cup in England,” he said.
“All spots are up for grabs and no-one is guaranteed a position.
“It has always been the case.
“You have to work hard and make sacrifices to earn a call-up, so I will definitely fight for a spot.
“It will be though because so many players are playing overseas and there are many good players coming up so it will be a challenge but I’m prepared to roll up my sleeves and earn my spot.
“The World Cup more than a year away and there are other obstacles like injuries that you have to avoid or overcome.
“Another big challenge is the Covid-19 situation.
“I believe it has affected preparations for the World Cup.
“But I’m sure the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League and head coach Michael Marum have plans in place to get the team ready for the World Cup.”
Meninga, who turns 27 on June 6, said wearing the Kumuls jersey was always a proud moment for him and his family.
He said the Kumuls’ 28-10 win over the touring Great Britain Lions in November was a highlight of his rugby league career.
The 186cm, 101kg forward has played five tests and two Prime Minister’s 13 fixtures for PNG.
