NATIONAL Housing and Urbanisation Minister John Kaupa will allocate a piece of land in Goroka to build a new courthouse.
Kaupa was in Goroka last vweekend and tasked his officer there to identify a National Housing Corporation (NHC) property near the current court house for that purpose.
He said the NHC would sell the land to the Eastern Highlands government and the judiciary at an affordable price.
“I am aware of the need for an expansion of the existing court premises in Goroka,” he said.
“We (ministry) will make land available for the construction of the new National and Supreme Court house in Goroka.”
Kaupa said the courthouse would serve the Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Madang and Morobe.
He also said he would make changes to manage housing matters better in Goroka saying: “I want to make housing become affordable and allow public servants to access to good accommodation.”
Last year, Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia voiced the need to expand the Goroka court house during a visit.
