THE inaugural Papua Youth Games kicked off yesterday in Alotau, Milne Bay, with three provinces competing in the week-long event.
Community Development, Youth and Religion Minister Wake Goi and Alotau MP Charles Abel opened the Games in the presence of Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation officials and other dignitaries.
It is an initiative of the National Youth Development Authority, PNG Sports Foundation, Community Development, Youth and Religion Department and supported by the provincial government.
The participating provinces are Central, Northern and host Milne Bay. Unfortunately, Gulf and Western were unable to register. The Games will see youths compete in soccer, volleyball, netball and touch.
NYDA director-general Joe Itaki said this was a great initiative to expose rural talents.
“The main purpose of the Games is to identify talents in the rural and local level government areas,” he said.
The event will complete all round-robin matches by Friday with the finals scheduled for the weekend.
