A MORESBY South basketball competition, sponsored by local MP Justin Tkatchenko, has attracted 32 teams in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Competition manager Purari Muri said the initiative had attracted untapped potential and interest from youths in Kaugere.
He said all the teams had been advised to wear their proper team apparel or risk forfeiting matches.
Muri said since it was community-oriented activity, residents should work together and take ownership of the competition.
“We are all volunteering for settlement youths — men and women — to take part in basketball at the grassroots level.
“We are not paid to do this. We are passionate about promoting the sport and helping unearth raw talents at this level.
“The grassroots level is where new talents are identified, so that should be the focus.”
Purari and Maka Muri are helping run the competition through their experience as Papua New Guinea internationals.
