AN official wants to see more awareness on gender-based and sexual violence for people living in the Moresby South electorate.
Kaugere Centre gender-based and sexual violence coordinator Rose Marai said awareness should be organised for people living in Sabama, Kaugere, Kokeva, Joyce Bay, Horse Camp, Kirakira village, Kila Barracks, Gabuta, Badili, Korobosea, 2-Mile Hill and Koki market.
“Many victims of domestic violence, women and children flooded into my office for help after I went out conducting awareness,” she said.
She urged churches, non-government organisation and stakeholders to focus on issues in the communities.
Marai had started educating the people on these issues with the help of community leaders, women, pastors and youths.
“I saw that there was a need for awareness so I started writing letters to leaders in the communities making arrangement to go and speak to them,” she said.
She said there had been positive feedbacks from people. She said many survivors were now aware of where to go to get help.
Community Development and Religion department Secretary Anna Solomon could not be reached yesterday to comment on Marai’s suggestion for more awareness.
