Morobe administration needs counsellors

THE community development division of the Morobe administration needs counselling officers, community learning coordinator Siove Dore says.
Dore said they were unable to assist victims of abuse and violence because of staffing issues and the lack of training on trauma counselling. “We don’t have skilled people,” she said.
“We have counsellors who know the basics but don’t understand trauma.
“Sometimes we refer (victims) to the police and hospitals but they too do not have staff specifically trained in that area.
Dore said there were six volunteers helping people in the communities to seek trauma counselling.
“With counselling, we have to spend a lot of time with clients to understand them and allow them to open up on their feelings,” she said.
