BASKETBALLER Apia Moi Muri is surprised at being named the Most Valuable Player in the Papua New Guinea Men’s Basketball League.

Muri, pictured, could not believe his name being called out during the awards night on Saturday evening.

It was still sinking in yesterday as Muri said it was unbelievable being named MVP of the season leading Exodus.

He said it was unfortunate he missed the grand final series because of commitments in Manila, Philippines.

He said there were other players who performed extremely well in the competition but “to vote me is good news”. “I salute the PMBL board for recognising me for the top awards of the season and I look forward to the start of the second conference on May 27,” he said.

“This award is not only for me but for the Exodus executive headed by Banduru, coach/father Moi (Muri) and as well as my team mates who make it possible on court.

“I want to maintain my form and discipline, including changing attitude is key to my success and looking forward and preparing for the 2015 Pacific Games.

“I’m returning to Manila, Philippines, to sign a contract with a club there in June after three months playing in the provincial tournament, which is good preparations for me to improve and develop.”

As a power forward and best all-rounder he was named in the ‘Mythical 5’ with younger brother Purari as the point guard, off guard Saints Sibona Kala, small forward Mika Loko and centre Robert Kave.

Tamaraws centre and former international Robert Kave scooped the MVP for the grand final against Exodus.

The Rookie of the year was 20-year-old Tamaraws guard Gabriel Elavo, while the Most Improved player was Chariots forward Jonathan Riu.

Cairns Taipan Kerry Williams was the guest of honour and presented the awards.

The second semi professional  competition season tips will start on May 27.
