POLICE in Eastern Highlands have warned motorists to follow traffic safety rules and drive sensibly to avoid causing road accidents over the Christmas and New Year festive season.
Eastern Highlands police commander Supt Michael Welly issued the warning during a press conference in Goroka yesterday.
He said the Christmas and New Year period was known for road accidents that sometimes claimed lives.
“I urge PMV (public motor vehicle) owners and drivers to make sure their buses and trucks are road worthy before they put them on the road,” he said.
“I also warn them not to overload their vehicles with too many passengers, police will set up roadblocks and check them.”
Supt Welly said this after confirming a road accident at Lapilo village opposite the New Tribes Mission outside Goroka town on Sunday.
Supt Welly said a young man and a female friend were driving towards Goroka from Henganofi at high speed, when the vehicle went off the road and down a ravine.
“Fortunately, they survived the accident but the girlfriend sustained serious injury to her abdomen and legs and was admitted at the Goroka General Hospital’s intensive care unit,” he said.
