A REMANDEE who jumped off a Correctional Service vehicle on its way from Alotau District Court house to Giligili prison on Nov 18 was shot and killed by police near Alotau town.
Milne Bay police commander Supt Peter Barkie told The National that the man was armed and had been harassing the public when he was caught by police.
Police were tipped off about the escapee’s whereabouts and surprised him, shooting and capturing him after he tried to resist.
The wounded man was taken to the hospital but died later.
Supt Barkie said the deceased was known by police and the community and had committed serious offences such as armed robbery and car theft while on the run.
“He was arrested and charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was in custody when he appeared in court and escaped while on his way back to Giligili,” he said.
The deceased had a homemade shotgun and 12 gauge shotgun bullets when he was shot and captured.
Supt Barkie said his office had called for the escapee to surrender to police on several occasions but instead continued to commit crimes.
