THE Moresby South Motu-Koita netball tournament received a boost from Swire Shipping with the donation of gear for the senior and intermediate divisions at Koki’s Southside Fitness Centre yesterday.
Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said the donation was a bonus for women in the electorate.
“It’s great to see the business community coming on board and supporting these activities through the Moresby South office,” he said.
“It just shows the confidence of businesses houses in what we’re trying to do with our women in the community.
“Gender equality and women’s empowerment in our traditional Moresby South villages are important.
“They’re the traditional landowners and we’ve set this tournament to bring the junior and senior teams to the next level.
“This contribution will go a long way for the tournament and all the teams involved.”
Swire shipping representative Emily Tau said the donation went towards creating opportunities for women in the electorate through sports.
“We believe in supporting events like this that create a platform for people in Papua New Guinea to showcase their talents,” she said.
“It’s this type of tournaments that create a pathway and many other opportunities for people and what they are passionate about.
“We’d like to thank the people of Moresby South for giving us the chance to support a worthy cause.”
The intermediate and senior divisions entered their first round of matches over the weekend with up to 20 teams from five villages competing in the tournament.
The finals for both divisions will be held in September with a Moresby South squad to be selected from the tournament.
