FORMER Super Rugby player Aidan Toua and his local club in Queensland have donated three sets of uniforms to the Motu Koitabu team that will be participating in the Capital Rugby Union this season.
Toua told The National yesterday that he was happy to work with Motu Koita Assembly chairman Dadi Toka Jr in arranging the donation of the uniforms. The local club that Toua plays for is Easts Tigers who participates in the Queensland Premier Rugby competition.
“There were 140 jerseys (three sets) donated by East Tigers Rugby Union who are my local based in Brisbane,” Toua said.
“The Tigers have a close relationship with Churchie, which is a school that me and Dadi Toka Jr once attended.
“So the club had some old jerseys that they were willing to donate and through Dadi and myself we were able to find the right place for them.
“I am confident that the support will go a long way in helping Dadi set up a Motu Koitabu team in the Capital Rugby competition.”
Meanwhile, Toua said Papua New Guinea had an abundance of rugby union talents.
He said establishment of good pathways could produce professional rugby players in the future.
“It’s hard for me to comment on the status of rugby in PNG because I haven’t been home for a while to see what’s going on,” he added.
“I think the big thing that needs to be looked at is pathways.
“I am a huge believer that the athletes are there, they just need a right structures and pathways to allow them to succeed. It’s much easier said than done and I am sure the people in charge are doing everything they can to see rugby in PNG to improve.”
