YANGORU-SAUSSIA MP Richard Maru says the Maru Cup football tournament will return during the Easter celebrations in April.
He made the announcement when visiting two Yangoru-Saussia teams that took part in the Toti Cup tournament in Lae, Morobe.
“The Maru Cup will be back in April and we have already allocated money for the tournament with good prizes,” Maru said.
“We want all four local-level government areas of the district to have their own tournaments and field their best teams in the Maru Cup.
“And from there, we will select players who will form a team to represent the district in bigger tournaments.
“The district is changing with investors coming in.
“We can have these investors help sponsor our team to compete in bigger tournaments and even the (Kumul Petroleum) National Soccer League.
“We are also looking at having competitions in schools so that we can have players who are trained at an early age.
“From the school competitions, we will identify and expose upcoming talents.”
Maru said the district had invested a lot of resources in infrastructure and this time, they would invest in sports.
