Nali: DDAs responsible for province, district roads

UNDER the Road Management and Fund Act (Amendment 2020), all district and provincial roads are the responsibility of the district development authorities (DDAs), Works Minister Michael Nali says.
“The law specifies that roads that connect local level governments (LLGs) and from one province to another are under the purview of DDAs,” he said.
“When a road connects one LLG to another LLG, it is classified as a district road and when it connects one district to another within the province, it is a provincial road.”
Nali said for a road to be classified as a national highway, that road had to connect one province to another.
“I have to clarify this because in the past, there are confusion in classifying which type of road falls under which category,” he said.
“Under the amended law, the Government is shifting the responsibilities of maintenance and road rehabilitation to the provinces and districts with funding assistance.”
He also emphasised that for a province or district to carry out road maintenance and rehabilitation, the Works Department would always be on standby to ensure all standards were followed.
“It is the department’s responsibility to ensure that provinces and districts carry out quality road works that meet the required standards,” Nali said.
