PAPUA New Guinea Defence Force Intelligence Unit director Col Otto Pandum is the new National Intelligence Organisation (NIO) director-general, Public Service Minister Elias Kapavore says.
“Col Pandum, pictured, was appointed by the National Executive Council last week with Opposition Leader Patrick Pruaitch’s support. Colonel Pandum’s appointment has now put to rest many questions regarding this position,” Kapavore said.
Col Pandum brings to the organisation a wealth of experience in national and international intelligence matters.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, when responding to questions in the last Parliament session, gave an undertaking for the NIO director-general’s appointment to be made as a Government priority, especially as Papua New Guinea was preparing to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in November.
Col Pandum replaces Benjamin Umba, who was acting director-general for two years.
Meanwhile, Col Pandum thanked the NEC for appointing him.
“I’m taking it as a challenge, especially when NIO is not in its functional state,” Coll Pandums aid.
“I thank the NEC for having confidence in me.
“I’m not new in this field of intelligence as I have worked with Defence intelligence for many years and I believe we can get NIO moving forward in fulfilling its functional roles,” he said.
