National teams and naming rights

Letters

THE naming rights issue with regards to the rebranding of our national sporting teams by corporate sponsors, with their names or products, is a bad reflection on our sporting administration and Government agencies to protect and preserve our sporting icons.
I am disappointed that some of our national teams have being branded to be named after their corporate sponsors, which is politically not correct and does demonstrate a lack of respect and value of PNG sovereignty, national pride and identity.
The identity and value of our national team should be protected and corporate companies should exercise restraint as good corporate citizen and respect PNG iconic sporting teams.
It is an insult to Papua New Guineans and our country’s sovereignty for national teams such as the PNG Kumuls to be labelled PNG LNG Kumuls and PNG Orchids as PNG Oil Search Orchids
Where is the patriotism? Our iconic sporting brands should be valued for what they are and not because someone has given them money.
Our national and iconic PNG Kumul is our pride and identity, and the same goes for our other national teams.
Can the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission look into this issue please?
Imagine if a company called John Mary Limited is a sponsor of the Kumuls, will the national team will be then known as PNG John Mary Kumuls?
Do we see the New Zealand All Blacks or the Australian Kangaroos named after their sponsors?
A bad precedence has been set, which is both alarming and dangerous, and it raises the point of the Constitution protecting our sovereignty and identity.
This naming rights issue should be addressed by the Government.
