NGO calls for new thinking on sorcery

Letters

I AM pushing for a sorcery friendly society.
We have to find a concept that recognises sorcery as an integral part of our diverse cultural practices.
The vision of the NGO Warriors Against Sorcery is to accept sorcery and make good use of the culture in developing the country instead of causing fear and anxiety.
As stated in our Medium Term Development goals, we as Papua New Guineans must use the PNG ways in development. Moreover, our Constitution recognises our traditional values.
Therefore, we as Warriors Against Sorcery (WAS) have developed a sorcery friendly society action plan with the view that the practice of sorcery is authentic and is here to stay and cannot be done away with very easily.
The concept is also based on the scriptures which tell us of the casting out of evil spirits – through the instructions of an angel – which had possessed a woman.
A coin has two sides, and so is sorcery.
Most of us look only at sorcery’s negative side.
Warriors Against Sorcery strongly believes that we can be an interesting country in the world with the use of good sorcery.
