THE National Information and Communication Technology Authority will hold a “Girls in ICT” essay competition this year.

A paid advertisement yesterday said it was an initiative of the international telecommunication union to observe International Girls in ICT Day on April 25.

It aims to expand horizons and change attitudes.

Last year the theme was on “Girls can do ICT”.

This year the theme is on creating opportunities and changing attitudes that will encourage more girls into ICT.

The competition is open to girls in Grades 10, 11 and 12 but excluding dependents of  NICTA staff.

The issue to address in the essay is “How ICT horizons (opportunities) can be expanded for girls and what attitudes needed change to provide these opportunities to girls”.

To enter the competition, girls can email the essay to [email protected] or submit printed and hand written entries in an A4 size envelope addressed to:

Girls in ICT Competition, NICTA, P.O. Box 8444, Boroko, NCD.

The competition will close on April 15. Names of the winners are expected to be announced on the NICTA website on April 25.

Prizes will be given to winners in each of the four regions plus an overall best essay winner.
