NIP to get autonomy

THE Government is in the process of giving autonomy to New Ireland after the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says.
O’Neill said directions had been issued to the public service to allow for autonomous powers to be transferred to New Ireland and other provinces.
He was responding to Rabaul MP Allan Marat during question time in Parliament on Wednesday.
Marat asked if the Government would grant greater autonomy to provinces who have asked for it and who were prepared for it given the decline in quality of national governance.
O’Neill said: “Yes this government is doing that already with Bougainville. We are now in the process of doing that with New Ireland, we have given directions to our public service to allow for the autonomous powers to be transferred to the provinces and we will roll it out as we go.”
