THE Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League Northern Confederation staged a tournament last weekend to select its women’s, Under-20 and men’s teams for this weekend’s Telikom National Nines Championships in Port Moresby.
Teams that competed were fielded by leagues which had met the national governing body’s affiliation and registration requirements.
The men’s teams were Wewak, Unitech, Lae One and Lae Two.
For the women and U20s, only Lae fielded two teams in each division.
Confederation chairman Robin Iveke acknowledged Telikom for its sponsorship of the pre-season tournament.
He said it was the governing body’s first time to secure a sponsor for the pre-season.
“On behalf of the confederation, I thank the East Sepik provincial government, Wewak Rugby League and its sponsor for ensuring the participation of their men’s team despite the Coronavirus pandemic,” Iveke said.
“I’m appealing to domestic leagues to comply with the governing body’s affiliation and registration requirements before next Friday.”
The confederation has selected its sides for the national nines championships.
