THE Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) is gathering steam as teams vie for the top-four playoff spots with nine matches remaining in the regular season, says an official.
NSL assistant manager Micah Kaneng told The National the competition had intensified following the early Oceania Football Confederation Champions League exits of Lae City and Hekari United.
“All the 10 NSL teams are now more focused and determined to earn a Champions League spot,” he said.
“With two Champions League spots on offer, teams are now realising the opportunities of regional football and getting into the heat of competition back home.
“It has made everyone work harder. It has become a goal for the teams to not only vie for the NSL title but compete for the two Champions League spots allocated to Papua New Guinea.
“We made it possible for franchises to get there and they have the opportunity to play in that league.”
Kaneng said domestic giants City and Hekari, who finished first and second respectively last season, had set the standard for Papua New Guinea football.
“Hekari and City are setting the pace,” he said.
“Debutants Vitiaz United have prepared well for the competition.
“The Vitiaz management did its homework to prepare the team and it’s no surprise that they are in third spot.
“The points ladder speaks for itself and the pick-up period was after round five.
“You can see a change in the matches.
“Teams are starting to get a little more serious compared with the start of the season.”

  • What’s happening with Star Mountains FC? The whole team from players and executives must be removed ASAP. They have not given opportunities to the local boys.
