NWS: Strong winds set for coastlines

CENTRAL and Milne Bay island coastlines can expect strong winds this week, according to the National Weather Service.
Director Jimmy Gomoga said a low pressure system (strong winds) was developing in the Solomon Sea, creating very strong winds for those areas.
“People along the coastlines of Central and the Milne Bay islands should be aware as very strong winds are developing, which will be extended to the Vitiaz Strait and West New Britain in the coming week,” he said.
“The monsoon trough will be active throughout the forecast period, expect occasional showers and thunderstorm activity and squally winds over the country in the coming days.
“There is a risk of flooding, lightning strikes and landslides in the Highlands, and most likely hailstorms which could occur with forecasted severe thunderstorms.
“All coastal areas of the country, including the Bismarck, Solomon and Coral seas, can expect moderate to fresh north-west winds with moderate to rough seas.
“Potential impacts include risks to bush material houses and small boat owners and fishermen, who are warned to be extra careful when going out at sea or avoid going.”
