Off-season league naming squad to play Digicel Cup’s Vipers, Dabaris

The Morata Off-Season Rugby League will tomorrow announce its side to play Digicel Cup franchises Port Moresby Vipers and Central Dabaris next month.
Head of selection and former Port Moresby Viper Eki Ene told The National yesterday that they would hold a trial tomorrow to give players a second chance to push for spots in the league’s representative side after an initial side was pencilled in after the NCD Governor’s Cup. “This trial is like a second chance for the players who missed out on the NCD Governor’s Cup and want to prove themselves and even impress Digicel Cup scouts,” he said.
Ene said Morata League had some talented players and tomorrow’s trial would be an opportunity to state their cases for selection into the team to play the Vipers and Dabaris. “Both Vipers and Dabaris will most likely field the players from their train-on squad,” he said.
“Most of their regular players won’t be part of it but they’ll use the opportunity to trial out other players they scouted in Governor’s Cup.” and Port Moresby Rugby League.”
Ene, a former Digicel Cup player himself, said he had to watch the league’s 23 teams and come up with a 40-man squad and would then trim it down to 30-man team.
Ene said he was confident some of his Morata league players would make the Vipers and Dabaris squads for the 2021 season.
