Opposition to Apec discouraged

Letters

I WRITE to express my views on the recent cost issues that the opposition is taking up against the government for the Apec Leaders’ Summit next month.
I believe this is the time to milk more out of the giant economies rather than taking potshots at the government.
The basic principle of business is that you spend money to make more money.
Is the Apec Summit not a business? Yes, it is a business and a lucrative one at that, and Papua New Guinea as a country should embrace and get as much out it as possible.
Our families, villages, towns and cities and government should all work together to get something out of Apec.
I believe that economies with lots of money will be at the summit and we should therefore be prepared to let them know what we have to sell.
It is important for the opposition to position itself as a government to take something out of this summit. Being in the opposition does not mean that you are not in government.
I can understand why the opposition is making negative comments because this summit is the biggest meeting of the world leaders ever hosted on our shores and so it is an opportunity for the opposition to make some noises.
The opposition is in fact a positive term because when you oppose something then your opposition will help make things better.
But to oppose the Apec summit simply for the sake of providing some dissenting voices is a little way off course. We should respect the people who have come and those who will come to attend Apec meetings.
We as a nation know how to respect people and we should respect especially those we hope to do business with.
We need friends don’t we?
