WOMEN in Northern have stood up to participate in decision-making by contesting seats in the local level government (LLG) elections.

More than 10 were nominated yesterday in their LLG and ward stations.

Assistant election manager Daisy Hombagani in Popondetta said eight female candidates had been nominated for the Popondetta Urban LLG and two in Kokoda.

Hombagani said nominations in all nine LLGs had progressed well in the past week.

“Nominations continued until around 6pm on Tuesday. The situation on the ground is neutral. There is no trouble caused so far it is so good.

“Candidates are getting into the campaign mood now.

“You could hear them addressing the communities late in the evening or early in the morning,” she said.

So far, Higaturu LLG has recorded the highest number of 121 candidates for a ward council.

Oro Bay received 21 candidates for the LLG president.
