Parliament Speaker talks in different tongues

The National, Thursday January 21st, 2016

I WAS intrigued by The National’s story on January 12 about Parliament Speaker Theodore Zurenuoc being escorted to the official dice in Kagua, Southern Highlands on January 8 to address students before the start of the new school year.

The challenge issued to students to uphold Christian principles and values is undisputed and I have always applauded the Speaker for bringing that quality into the Parliament.

However, my issue is with Zurenuoc getting his priority right.

Here he is addressing students as a national leader knowing full well that two days later he would be wearing his local hat to attend the official opening of the 30th Lutheran National Synod which was hosted by his very own people in Finschafen.

We understand he is wearing two hats but given the situation with last minute preparations for the synod, we expected our leader to be focused on getting his backyard clean up before our visitors arrived.

That is what I refer to as getting priorities right.

Interestingly, in the same newspaper edition, we find a news story on overflowing septic, foul smell, problems of bad plumbing work and funding issues affecting food stock for delegates to the synod.

This is just the tip of the ice berg as there are more surprises in store for our political leader.

Politics and church do not mix – they co-exist while keeping a check and balance on each other.
