A PASTOR is leading a coral conservation and replanting project on Karkar Island, Madang which is into its second year.
Pastor Matei Ibak of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG from Karkar came up with the idea of preserving coral reefs around the island but didn’t know how to go about it.
He got some information from the internet and started the project.
Ibak said he had started a coral nursery and replanting coral in the past two years.
It was however, halted following reports of an oil spill at the Basamuk refinery which made it unsafe to be underwater for more than eight hours a day.
“We will check on the coral again after we are informed that the sea is safe for us,” Ibak said.
“I need experts to help me with what I’m doing. There are some people trying to help with coral conservation including some students from UPNG.
“I’m looking for more advice.
“I also do mangrove nursery and planting because we are on an island and we need to conserve everything on it.”
Ibak said people were spoiling the environment and they should fix it. “I have three lines of coral nursery and every Saturday, I dive and clean algae and anything on the coral.”
