PETER’S PUNCHLINE

  • Joshua Lau is playing five-eighth tomorrow for the Hunters. I think he’ll have a big game. Go get’em Josh!
  • I’m still wondering where Francis Kembis has gone to. Such a waste of talent. Needs to get back in the game.
  • The best women cricketers will be in action during the Isuzu T20 Smash that starts tomorrow. Same the four teams: Mudmen (er, women), Black bass, Cassowaries and Mariners. I wonder if the ropes will be brought in another metre or two?
  • This will be a valuable hit out for the Lewas squad players who will be playing for the four sides. Tanya Ruma, Branda Tau, Pauke Siaka, Buruka Vicky, Vicky Ara’a, Geua Tom, Sibona Jimmy and Kevau Frank are some of the names that will feature at Amini Park over the next two weeks. Get out to the home of PNG cricket and watch our best talent in action. Admission is free. Catch a six and get K100.
  • A former PNG wicketkeeper was having back pain while doing commentary at a recently completed T20 tournament to which his fellow commentator quipped that it was because of all those years he carried PNG. Check his stats, JV was the anchor and on many an occassion.
  •  Best backhanded compliment of 2024 so far was Governor Allan Bird telling Parliament that James Marape and John Rosso were the country’s two best firefighters.
  • Veteran Hollywood B-lister Michael Pare` has an accented surname so it is pronounced “Pah-ray”. It’s French, I think. Other words that have that same inflection are soiree (swa-ray), blase` (blah-zay)… there’s probably countless other examples in the English language. I’ve also noticed the accented e` used in some PNG names too. The only reason I can think of why this is the case is to ensure names are’n’t mispronounced. Can you imagine a PNG name that has an ‘e’ that should be pronounced ‘eh’ instead pronounced with a long ‘eee’ sound or “ere” as in where.
  • To all those gym rats and guys who used to hit the weights back in the day, remember the brand “York”. You had York barbells and dumbbells and various other training equipment. Well I found out the weights and gym equipment brand is named after a town called York in Pennsylvania, USA. The company is headquartered there and was established by a champion American weightlifter, Bob Hoffman, in the 1930s after he bought the Milo Barbell company and renamed it.
  •  NRL pundit thinks the Rabbitohs are done in 2024 and will end up with the wooden spoon. Probably right. But can they just help AJ get to 200. That’s something to aim for isn’t it? Just get our boy to he double century. Anything after that is gravy. – PGTP ([email protected])
