PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports

  • A common theme on the posts on Facebook regarding the weekend’s Digicel Cup action. The refereeing was garbage. People/fans are not mincing their words. Sort it out. It’s getting ridiculous.
  • The Tigers beat the Gurias 24-16 in a competitive tussle in Lae yesterday. Can’t wait for the return fixture in Port Moresby. Congratulations to the Gulf Isou for getting their first win, a 16-10 triumph over the Eagles. Wasn’t impressed with the Muruks’ 12-6 win over the Vipers but the city men were bland as hell in attack.
  • Funniest nick name given to an acting head of a state agency over the weekend: “Michael Jackson”. Cheers Joffie.
  • Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Everton. It’s not much to celebrate but at least its better than nothing.
  • Hopefully, Lae City do the right thing and formally release Raymond Gunemba and Nigel Dabinyaba so they can play in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League – for other clubs. It’d be the height of pettiness if the Lae franchise’s management can’t let these two gentlemen go. After this year’s falling out over the sacking of coach Peter Gunemba by Ian Chow, Raymond’s position in Lae City was always untenable. What do you expect him to do, hang around at a club that dumped his old man? Get real.
  • 48-0! Goodness me. It doesn’t get any easier for the Broncos who face Melbourne on Friday.
  • Was wondering why Bellamy picked Marion Seve on the bench against the Titans and got my answer midway through the second half against the Titans when he came on for Justin Olam. I have grave fears for Justin making the 17 for Friday’s game against the Broncos in Brisbane.
  • Cracked up at Josh Papalii’s jab at Mitch Aubusson post Raiders win. Papalii ran through a gapping hole in the Roosters’ defence on Thursday night to score a crucial try and allegedly tweeted about it later suggesting that Aubusson must’ve been taking tackling lessons from Darius Boyd.
  • Just resign, Seibold. We’re sick and tired of the excuses. And take the board and Boyd with you!
  • Good to see boxing back on the scene with a show on July 31. It’s really a ‘stay busy’ bout for Raka Kauko Jr who faces Thomas “Spiderman” Kagili. Should be a good dust up.
  • The National Sports Policy should deliver the direction and guidance sports agencies in PNG need to develop sport. I’m sure everyone by now realises and appreciates that sport isn’t simply about fun and games. There are social and economic implications to do with this part of life for Papua New Guineans. – PGTP ( [email protected] )
