ARGUABLY PNG’s best performed sporting team will carry the weight of the nation on its shoulders when it goes into battle against the best and the biggest cricket playing nations in the World at the 2010 U/19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand next year.
Chairman of Cricket PNG Mick Nades and the chairman of the national selection panel Api Leka yesterday announced the PNG Garamut’s team to contest at the World Cup of Cricket in New Zealand from Jan 10 to the 28.
In announcing the final team, Nades said: “The team has some surprises and proves that it is never too late to stake a claim for selection and players have put up some outstanding performances in recent time and fully deserve their selection.”
“Lega Siaka from United CC (17) had the disappointment of missing selection for the qualifying tournament in Canada, but through his performance as Player of the Series in the Hebou Super 8s , and also with a solid performance for the Pacific MMI Marlins in the Don’t Drink and Drive Legends T20 he has batted his way into a spot.
“The second surprise inclusion has almost come out of the Blue” Nades said.
“Timothy Mou playing also for United has been selected to add the much needed pace to our attack to support Raymond Haoda Jr.
“We will now go after our more fancied opposition with all guns blazing and it is time for the cricket world to sit up and take notice.”
However, these decisions also mean there will be disappointments and three players Mea Daniel Ao, Ao Mea and Bau Aniani were unlucky to have missed out.
Fifteen-year-olds Norman Vanua, Kabua Morea and Dogodo Bau have also been closely considered.
The team comprises of Lega Tau, Heni Siaka, Toua Tom, Sese Bau, Rogeaka Roge, Eno Steven, John Boge Reva, Charles Amini Jnr, Raymond Haoda Jnr, Vagi Oala, Jason Kila (C), Johnathan Diho, Tony Ura Lega Siaka and Timothy Mou.
