PAPUA New Guinea were thumped by the Australian Indigenous team by 84 runs at Fehberg Park in Brisbane yesterday.
Playing their first 50-over match of their one-month tour of Queensland and the Northern Territory, the Hebou PNG Barramundis came across a determined Australian Indigenous outfit.
The Indigenous side posted a mammoth 347/9.
Openers Dary Short (86) and Damon Eagon (77) got the Indigenous side off to a strong start, adding 136 runs for the opening wicket.
Ben Abbatanglo (75) and Cameron Trask (45) continued to pile on the runs afterwards.
Chad Soper (3-60) the best of the Barramundis’ bowlers while John Boge Reva (2-36) and Nosiana Pokana (2-48) picked up wickets.
In reply the Barramundis started badly, slumping to 28/3 in the seventh over when Tony Ura (8) was dismissed by Sam Doggett.
Sese Bau (57) and Mahuru Dai (32) tried to rebuild the innings in the middle overs, putting on 60 runs for the fifth wicket. The Barramundis were in deep trouble at 152/8.
Some great lower order hitting by Norman Vanua (71 not out off 57 balls) put some respectability into PNG’s score, before they were eventually bowled out for 263 in 47.1 overs.
The Barramundis play the Indigenous 11 again tomorrow at Redlands Ground in Brisbane.
The tour is in preparation for ICC Intercontinental Cup (ICUP)/World Cricket League Championships (WCLC) Round 6 fixture against Scotland which takes place in Port Moresby from Oct 1-8.
The Barramundis are currently sitting in fourth place on 40 points in the ICUP standings after five rounds and in second place on the WCLC standings on 14 points after five rounds as well.
