PNGFA calls on public to stop criticising referees

THE Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) has called on the public to refrain from criticising referees in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) and other competitions around the country.
“Our observation through print media, electronic and social media platforms are beginning to create fear and panic among our match officials,” PNGFA general secretary Dimirit Mileng said.
“Without referees, we will not enjoy the matches we watch every weekend, whether its in Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Kimbe, Goroka or in the remotest part of our country.
“Whether its soccer, rugby, volleyball, netball or any other sport, games need a referee or umpire.
“It requires perseverance, passion and love of the sport for anyone to pick a whistle to officiate.
“In football, there are stringent requirements each match official must meet and demonstrate that he or she is physically fit, mentally strong to stay under pressure, confident and consistent in the application of the laws of the game.
Mileng said NSL clubs were beginning to question a lot of calls made by referees.
“This attitude is also rubbing onto their players who continue to disrupt the match each time a call is made and prolong the re-start of play,” he said.
“Referees are humans but they try their best to control and apply the laws of the game without bias.
“If there is any demonstration of bias or conflict of interest by referees, we would appreciate that it is documented with evidence.
“We are mindful of the abuse and opinions that continue to bust the performance of match officials.
“This must stop. There are provisions within the PNG disciplinary code and code of conduct that could be applied to offending officials.”
