PNGOC to host sports programme for youths

A SPORTS education and awareness programme will be hosted on Sunday by the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee in Port Moresby as part of celebrations to mark International Youth Day.
The day is observed on Aug 12 every year however, the sports programmes will be held on Sunday in lieu of it. Four national sports federations, PNG Basketball Federation, Cricket PNG, AFL PNG, Netball PNG and the Papua New Guinea Athletes Commission will be involved in the event through their respective community sports education and awareness programmess.
Each organisation will be running separate activities for young people which focus on healthy living, skill development, positive attitudes and caring for the environment and community.
They will also have the opportunity to meet some of Papua New Guinea’s elite athletes and hear from them.
The sports component is part of a larger programme for a one day festival which is being jointly organised by the National Capital District governor’s office, Transparency International, Population Services International, World Health Organisation, Marie Stopes PNG and the PNG Olympic Committee.
“The development of our young people is important for the future of our country.
“Through sports we can be able to instil good values in them that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said PNG Olympic Committee secretary-general Auvita Rapilla.
