ABOUT 100 homemade guns were destroyed by a police mobile squad who were in Popondetta for operations to help reduce and prevent crime in Northern.
Last year, the squad was sent to the province to support police and while there they carried out raids.
According to the then-provincial police commander Chief Insp Michael Welly, the raids found many youths in possession of homemade guns.
“Mobile squad 1 (MS1) were deployed to Popondetta last September after a surge in crimes in the province,” he said.
“The call to bring out MS1 was after a shoot-out between my policemen and thugs who came into town and had no regard for police.
“It was assessed that business houses and citizens were at risk despite the efforts of my men so a call had to be made to bring additional manpower from Port Moresby to support our local policemen.”
The homemade guns included rifles, shotguns and pistols.
Several ammunition were also confiscated with the firearms.
The guns were cut up and dumped in the sea.
