FOUR man were arrested by the police in Wewak last Wednesday in relation to the killing of a man on May 3.
East Sepik police commander (PPC) Supt Albert Beli said the arrest was made possible by leaders in the communities.
Supt Beli said he was pleased with the support that the community had put in to identifying the suspects and handing them to police.
He said the suspects were now in custody and the matter was being investigated.
He said Richard Ware, 37, of Wingei, Yangoru, was allegedly killed outside Wewak town during an argument with the suspects.
Supt Beli said the death was the result of an argument after an armed robbery along the Sepik Highway.
He said the owners of the bus were not happy with the people of the area where the robbery occurred so they went in two busloads to Wingei to ask why their buses were robbed.
Supt Beli said the buses were attacked by locals when they arrived at the village.
Police intervened and stopped the attack and told the bus owner and his people to return to Wewak.
He said while in Wewak, they started an argument and Ware was killed. Ware is from Wingei where the two bus and the people were attacked.
He said K15,000 had been given to the relatives of the deceased as “bel kol” (appeasement) money last week.
Supt Beli said the compensation paid would calm tensions between the communities while police conducted their investigation.
